Rockin' Robins

Finally the rain has stopped and the robins could go out to roost in the apple tree

I like mooching around charity shops, and recently found a small pile of knitting and sewing books. They had clearly been donated by one person. I bought this one for £1.50, which I thought was a bargain. It is jammed full of knitting patterns for all sorts of toys, but I think my favourite pattern is the one on the cover.

I mentioned a few weeks ago that I was trying to design a realistic robin for Christmas. Well, I think for the moment I am going to admit defeat. None of my robins looked very robin like. So I was left with a lot of brown and red wool, and thought I would have a go at Jean Greenhowe's little robin, which is part of the scarecrow pattern. They are really easy to make. It is Frankie's birthday tomorrow, and she said she would like to give each of her friends a little robin in their going home bags.

So I waited all yesterday for it to stop raining, so I could take a photo of the robins outside. But it seemed like the rain will never stop, so here is my first photo of the rockin' robins on my table indoors.  The rest of the brown wool has been used on another more autumny knit, which I'm in the process of writing up.

  1. I so love Sammy the scarecrow- a friend of a friend knitted one for me 26 years ago- he is still going strong along with the robin- he comforted all my boys when they were poorly- and still wove his magic when two were at uni and got glandular fever and had to come home for some tlc!
This row of robins looks gorgeous. What a lucky charity shop find!

  6. What cute little robins! I can't knit a lick, but I admire people who can. My aunt would love these. Thanks for stopping by (and, yes, the jack-o-lantern is a cat).

  7. Oh, what a coincience! I've just brought the same book back from my mother's, with a pile of other Jean Greenhowe patterns she didn't want any more. Over the years she knitted many of them, so I thought I would have a go, although I'm really a novice knitter. I want to do the penguins, and the hedgehogs, and the bees, and I love the 'witty knits' - and there's a pattern for a pedlar woman, with a tray of goodies... My Snapshot is at http://goo.gl/LAoN2

  8. What well-behaved little robins sitting so nicely in the tree! And so cute. I don't even know how to hold a knitting needle... I have to rely on others to make my crafts.

  20. I got myself a pile of lovely crochet patterns in charity shops the other day, so really appreciate the joy of finding treasures there. The robins are sweet, think I have that pattern so will see if I can find it. I crocheted 2d robins last year and made them into brooches as I struggled with making something solid too
