"Trolleys"

I'm not sure what is happening with me. This is rapidly becoming a dog/poetry blog. A few weeks ago I posted a poem that my mother had written "If in April", but since then going through her things we have found this clipping of her only published rhyme. It was printed in her local paper, The Orpington Times, back in 1982. The trolley pound system is pretty universal now. Perhaps my mum's poem did something to help. The poem is a little dated, as pound notes went out of circulation long ago, but she did have a good way with words.

  1. A pleasant approach to grassroots activism. A return system that works, too, universally. I wish a simple poem would make Donald Trump go away. (I thought this post was going to feature a knitted version of what Americans call trolleys, which would be rather cute actually.)

  2. This is a great poem. I have never heard shopping carts called trolleys. I guess it is a local thing.

    1. Well I had never thought that what we in England call a shopping trolley, is a shopping cart in America. We also have the other sort of shopping trolley, that you take to the shop to put your own stuff in. I would really like one, but my daughter has said she will never shop with me again if I get one.

  5. What a treasure to find among your mother's things! I love your photo, too -- shopping carts as abstract art.
My Saturday Snapshot post features a nearby bonsai garden.

  6. My mother-in-law loved to write poems when she was young. We found tens of them that had been published in the local paper and had them bound into a book.

  7. What a lovely thing to find - seems shopping trolleys have been a nuisance for a long time! (The patchwork Fairy http://patchworkfairy.com/new-patchwork-fairy-dresses/)

  8. Now I'm intrigued as to what Trolleys are in the US! I find so often I want to write about things where the word is different, pillows/cushions, popsicle/lolly sticks, yarn/wool, napkin/serviette, ha ha, two countries divided by a common language eh!
I love reading your mum's poems, she certainly did have a way with words - and I do remember pound notes from my childhood!
