Cutting out the paper pattern. |
This was the pattern we used. |
She picked a light weight cotton, which I thought would be easy to sew, and would gather easily. She hasn't done gathers before, so I thought it would be good to learn a new technique. The skirt is gathered at the front, and has elastic inserted in the waistband at the back.
Not quite sure what was up with the beret. I think she was getting in a French fashion sort of mood. |
A little bit of hand stitching to close up the channel for the elastic. |
And here is the skater girl in action |
What a lovely project to do together. Do we have a fashion designer in the making? Now that we've got a bit of sun, I feel I should be making an effort to sew some summer dresses.
ReplyDeleteLove the skirt! She is rockin' the beret!
ReplyDeleteSo cute...and what wonderful life skills you are teaching her!
ReplyDeleteShe needs to teach me to sew! Love her spring skirt.
ReplyDeleteI love these photos that illustrate a mother-daughter project...and the concept of sewing bees makes me feel nostalgic. Thanks for sharing. Here's MY SATURDAY SNAPSHOT POST
ReplyDeleteYour photos brought back lovely memories. My mom taught me how to sew, a skill that has been extremely valuable over the years. Your daughter did a great job on her skirt, and she has pride in being able to wear her creation. Thanks for showing the skater girl's skirt in action!
ReplyDeleteMy Saturday Snapshot post is HERE.
I tried to teach my daughter to sew, oh those many years ago. She was just not interested. She still does not sew! I haven't made a skirt or any garment for years, but now sew mostly quilts, maybe some tote bags, pillows and aprons. Great job and something she will remember always.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful project for mother daughter. I used to sew as a girl but i never took the time to pass on the skills to my daughters who don't know how to sew today as adults. Sigh. I love the final photo of her skating in her new skirt. My snapshot Saturday
ReplyDeleteHow fantastic that she can make a skirt for herself! I can barely sew on a button. It looks great. And she's rocking the beret too.
ReplyDeleteFabulous! We should all be teaching our children how to sew, I think. So useful and so much fun, too.

Awesome!!!
ReplyDeleteWow so pretty and different from what you can find in the shops. The beauty of making your own clothes
ReplyDeleteYour daughter has some serious style! I'm off with my daughter this week, and the plan is to get crafting a BFG costume for her upcoming book week at school.
ReplyDeleteImpressive stuff. There is nothing quite like wearing something you have made yourself, your daughter must be really pleased with the result. It looks great. Sewing bee has made me determined to make more of my own clothes again - when I find the time of course!
ReplyDeleteClever girl, move over mum the new girl is in town! She has done an excellent job of the skirt.
ReplyDeletewonderful! now you've inspired me to pick up some patterns for my daughter on our next trip to the US, haven't seen them at all here in Israel.....
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous thing to make together, I'm sure that my little one would love to be let loose on my machine - just not till she's a bit bigger ;)
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely project to do together, and such a great outcome too :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely project, I wish I had the patience to teach my daughter to sew:)
