Skater Girl Skirt

Cutting out the paper pattern.
School holidays are the time when you need a few indoor projects. So my daughter and I decided that it would be a good idea to make a skirt. Since she has not done it before, we thought we would have a go at following a pattern. We were also a bit inspired by the return of The Great British Sewing Bee.

This was the pattern we used.

She picked a light weight cotton, which I thought would be easy to sew, and would gather easily. She hasn't done gathers before, so I thought it would be good to learn a new technique. The skirt is gathered at the front, and has elastic inserted in the waistband at the back.

Not quite sure what was up with the beret. I think she was getting in a
French fashion sort of mood.

A little bit of hand stitching to close up the channel for the elastic.

And here is the skater girl in action

  1. What a lovely project to do together. Do we have a fashion designer in the making? Now that we've got a bit of sun, I feel I should be making an effort to sew some summer dresses.

  6. Your photos brought back lovely memories. My mom taught me how to sew, a skill that has been extremely valuable over the years. Your daughter did a great job on her skirt, and she has pride in being able to wear her creation. Thanks for showing the skater girl's skirt in action!
My Saturday Snapshot post is HERE.

  7. I tried to teach my daughter to sew, oh those many years ago. She was just not interested. She still does not sew! I haven't made a skirt or any garment for years, but now sew mostly quilts, maybe some tote bags, pillows and aprons. Great job and something she will remember always.

  8. What a wonderful project for mother daughter. I used to sew as a girl but i never took the time to pass on the skills to my daughters who don't know how to sew today as adults. Sigh. I love the final photo of her skating in her new skirt. My snapshot Saturday

  9. How fantastic that she can make a skirt for herself! I can barely sew on a button. It looks great. And she's rocking the beret too.

  10. Fabulous! We should all be teaching our children how to sew, I think. So useful and so much fun, too.

  13. Impressive stuff. There is nothing quite like wearing something you have made yourself, your daughter must be really pleased with the result. It looks great. Sewing bee has made me determined to make more of my own clothes again - when I find the time of course!
