I have found it really hard to find fairs that aren't exorbitantly expensive. I have only done a couple of fairs last year, but if the table is £35 (or more!) I have to sell an awful lot of little knits before I've made anything. Would love to know what other crafters pay for a table at a fair? Is it impolite to talk about money? (I think perhaps the best idea would be to get together with some like-minded crafters and organize it ourselves.)
So I've been beavering away at these little hearts, and will probably put the pattern on ravelry as a freebie. Very quick to knit, but the fun is deciding how to decorate them.

ReplyDeleteI agree about the craft fairs, hard to find lower priced ones (i'm in Surrey) especially when no guarentee of selling anything. Great idea about crafters getting together to organise their own- if only it was possible.

ReplyDeleteI think South East based fairs are generally a lot more expensive than in other places. It was one of the issues Amanda and I had when we were running Tickled Pink as a joint venture. The prices she was being asked in London were simply extortionate and made her doing fairs unviable, whereas here in the sticks, things are cheaper and therefore more doable.
ReplyDeleteI love the hearts, the colours look great hanging on the tree. Good luck on finding cheaper fairs. Maybe approach a school and offer to organise one. I'm due to do one at a village primary school and it's only £10 for the (small) table.

Aw!!! Wish I could knit ! Have just signed up for my first fair - its 47Euros for the table for one day. And I'm getting panicky too that I haven't enough stuff!!!

I know what you mean about worrying you don't have enough to sell - I booked 9 events over these 6 weeks from beginning of November to mid December but have just about convinced myself that if I've sold it all in the first few fair that's great, just put my feet up!
ReplyDeleteI do try to keep the cost down as like you say there's a lot to be sold if the stall costs too much. Around here people ask anything from £15 to £35+vat (todays latest ad sent through to me) for a pretty standard event, it's then a jump to the much bigger events which I have yet to try.

Ahhh they're gorgeous hearts :-) I cannot knit to save my life, so love to buy knitted goodies! I am only doing one craft fair this season - but it's a pricey one - £55!! I just HOPE there's enough foot fall to make up some of the money! Hope yours go well. Simmi x
