A Polar Work in Progress (and a Poem)

Polar Bear in there

There's a Polar Bear
In our Frigidaire-
He likes it 'cause it's cold in there.
With his seat in the meat
And his face in the fish
And his big hairy paws
In the buttery dish,
He's nibbling the noodles,
He's munching the rice,
He's slurping the soda,
He's licking the ice.
And he lets out a roar
If you open the door.
And it gives me a scare
To know he's in there--
That Polary Bear
In our Fridgitydaire.

  by Shel Silverstein

I've been working on something new, although I am not quite there with it yet. Still something not quite right yet about the shape of the head, muzzle and nose in particular. Perhaps the back should be a bit less curved? The legs could be stronger looking? the neck wider and a bit longer, I think?

What keeps you from sleep? Sadly these little details are the things that are keeping me awake at night ....

  1. He is cute so far. I think maybe smaller ears and smaller nose. Crafting often keeps me awake at night too. Sometimes I just have to sneak out of bed and do something I have thought of or I will never get back to sleep!

  2. I think you're too critical! Your polar bear is very cute and adorable!

  3. That is a very nice bear. However, you noted several parts you want to work on.

Move the shoulder hump forward to sit over the front legs a bit.
    Make the nose smaller.
and make the legs "stronger" - that's the right word choice.

Have some fun looking at pics of real polar bears. You did a great job so far, you just displayed him before you were satisfied.

And let us know when we can buy the pattern! Please! !!

  4. I'm already working on the improved version, where I have ironed out most of these things. I am a bit obsessed about trying to be realistic. I don't usually put wip's on my blog til I'm really happy with them, but nearly everything else I've been knitting recently are Christmas gifts that I don't want to show until later. There will definitely be a pattern, but probably not until after Christmas I'll let you know when.

  5. I think your polar bear is really sweet and the poem is wonderful. I think your being critical but I have to say I'm the same if I'm not happy with something. Hope you get a good nights sleep and don't dream too much about bears.

  8. Very cute, and I love the poem, too. And yes, I am sometimes kept awake by things I am imagining, but nothing like your creations...LOL. My awakening usually has to do with my blogs. Thanks for sharing.

  9. I am in awe of your talents as always - the profile pic looked more polar bearish than front on if that helps :-)
Also loved revisiting the Shel Silverstein poem - The Giving Tree is one of my favourite children's books - it always provoked such interesting conversations with my classes.

  10. I love that bear! Super cute...and Shel Silverstein was/is one of my favorite poets. I was always signing his books out from the library when I was younger until I could buy the books myself. I still read his Giraffe and a Half to one of the first grade classes at our elementary every March Reading Month.

  11. Aww, he's very cute! It's good that the only thing keeping you awake is thoughts of knitting :D x

  12. He's very cool ! (ahh, see what I did there!) I agree his legs could do with being a bit chunkier maybe, I'm sure what ever you come up with will be amazing as usual!

  13. So cute, very impressive. If I wake in the night I have to conciously stop myself thinking about stuff if you know what I mean else my mind won't stop ;) usually about work though.

  14. You are so talented being able to make these things. It reminds me of the polar bear that was on the TV show "Lost" but that is probably due to the fact that I am one of the show's biggest fans.

    Happy Holidays!

  15. He's a cute little bear, I'm sometimes awake at night, especially when I have personalised items to do. I'm looking forward to seeing the 'revised version' and I'm sure he'll be just as cute :)
