Crochet Diary - Hat or Fruit Bowl?

I tend with knitting to write about projects that I have finished, and that have worked. But with this crochet diary, I think I need to show you the failures as well, as it is meant to be an honest look at my learning.

I wanted to try and make a crochet bowl. I have seen some really beautiful bowls and baskets online, but couldn't find a pattern I could follow. So I thought I would just busk it. The bowl caused much hilarity among the family, as it did not have any rigidity, and was not even very nice to look at. More of a shapeless bag than a bowl.

So I changed the plan, and wondered if I kept going I could turn it into a stylish hat. This also caused another bout of teasing, and threats that no one would ever go out of the house with me if I wore it ...

So I think I have learned something, and that is that I am not ready to crochet without a pattern.

The old problem of how to photograph yourself in a hat

The whole thing has been unravelled, and I am back to thinking about granny squares and blankets.

  1. Ah. The truthfulness of family. Nothing lost if you learnt something. I'm yet to follow more than stitch instructions in crocheting. Anything with more structure will have to wait until I've finished my latest blanket.

    1. Just popping back over to give you the link to the crochet daisies. http://tillietulip.blogspot.co.uk/2012/06/to-beg-chain-ch-5-and-join-to-form.html. I'm a novice and found it easy enough to follow. Good luck.

  2. Two steps forward, one step back - but you'll get there, just keep trying. At least you can laugh along the way.

  4. I actually think it's quite a good hat - better than bowl.... I have made an OK crocheted bowl, I used some of the tshirt yarn that is super expensive here. I have a friend who brought it back from spain for me where it is cheap as chips apparently. It can at least hold its shape although the sides sag a little. ( I pretend it's supposed to do that!)

  5. Both as a hat and a bowl, your creation looked good to me. Too bad it fell apart. :-(

Thanks for sharing of your failures. For us creative people, hearing of the mistakes can inspire too! We need to know that not everything works all the time.

As for success, we already know from the rest of your blog, how wonderful you are at crochet! I look forward to hearing of your next creation. :-)

  6. Hey, it's called being versatile! - I crocheted a little pot a few years ago, and ended up turning it into a baby hat! - BTW, I thought the hat looked great.
Anyhoo, the "secret" to bowls, is in the fiber you use. Try a thick cotton and tighten up your stitches. Make a good firm base, either round or square, then work up. Personally, I like to go sideways, attaching as I go. Or, you could make a "boa" and then attach it to the base... You really don't need a "pattern". Think about how you would design one knitting and just adapt it to crochet. You HAVE the skills!!

  8. I had one of those failures. All.the time actually. But this one was a lopsided misshapen duck thing that was supposed to be a sweet little bird I was trying to make without a pattern. 4-5 attempts later and I finally made my amigurumi hummingbird!

  11. It was a week of ripping out for me too. Ugh.... I actually like both concepts. But the hat is the winner.

  12. I think it was quite sweet as a hat - and I can't crochet for toffee so you're definitely ahead of me there.

  13. Ahh yes, trial and error is part of the crocheting adventure! Now, if you had just crocheted with rags made from sheets instead of yarn, your basket would have been truly wonderful.....i have a bunch of examples on my blog. thanks for sharing on craft schooling Sunday!
